I'm Michael Dlan, your host for the next few minutes as we chat with financial expert, business owner and author John Browning, and welcome John Back to your podcasts. How are you this fine day? Doing well, doing I'm glad to hear that. We are talking today about really the center of what you do and what you help people do, the core of financial planning. And if I were to ask you, John, what what is the core of financial planning?...

What, how would you answer that question? Well, we've talked about it a little bit before, but the core of financial planning is number one. It's you, the client, that's the core. It's listening. For me, listening to you, the client, is the most important thing that we do to the whole time that we speak. And then it's not just about what you may see yourself. The client makes how they may see themselves right now today, but it might be about some of the questions that we ask to get to the not just what you want, what you want now, what you want in the future, but why you want it. HMM, and asking that super powerful one word question, most powerful question in the world. I think it's why? Why? Yeah, and Manytimes, we...

...really don't know that answer at not, at least not at a surface. We have to dig down deep, right. So that's good. And and the core of what you're what you're digging into right there, is getting to the place where somebody really understands why they want to do something so that they can really build a life. And I think most people probably come to you because they're thinking about building my portfol ill, my finances, and there you're going to help them do that, but you don't negate building their life. And how are you living the next three to five years? Don't just focus on the next thirty five years, right, yeah, that's exactly right. And when you think about a core. It kind of whole old things together, right. It's everything centered around that core. But it's actually kind of small about saying and on apple core of them. The bulk of the apple is, you know what you eat. That's your portfolio. You're going to...

...get, going to eat off that for the rest of your life. You're gonna, you know, build around that, make that as big as possible, but you always have to have the core and you the core is extremely important for holding it all together. If you lose your way and you you lose your what in your why? Then then it all falls apart on you, or it tends to. There might be pieces of it laying on the floor, but it's really difficult to grow in anyone solid direction. Interesting. I love that analogy because I was sitting here as you were talking about that, thinking of my wife as an apple core or just takes the core out of the apple. Take that core out of the Apple and the apple gets flimsy and then it starts to rot and thinks. So, yeah, you're right and I never thought about a core holding things together, but it's yeah, you think about the death star and Star Wars, right, they had to shooting that. The core and sorry. Yeah, you get rid of the core and everything calls. But same thing with your with your financial strate.

So you're the core, are you saying? The core of your financial plan really is the why, of of why you're wanting to do what you say you're wanting to do. That's right, that's right. It's not not even what you want, but it's why you want it. And most people, even if they've asked the question once, they haven't asked it or they haven't had someone else ask it multiple times, and they can be it could be annoying to to some people that to really do that. And it's important that you don't do it yourself, because you lie to yourself. Who Do you lie to? Most yourself? Right, because you want to tell a little like you want to give yourself excuses for you know why I want the Harley David Center or why I want that corvette? Right, why you need it? Right, you need it. Yeah, forgot all. Sorry, you for why you need it, but but the reality is it's okay to...

...want certain things and if it brings you joy, that's you. I have a chapter in the book called The snowflake theory. We are all different. I had I had an interesting conversation with they with a potential client and and we were talking things through. I was asking him about his why and a little bit about is what, and and we were talking about all, I like to travel. Wait, wait, wait, everybody likes to travel and all it. Everybody wants the same thing. They mutch a bigger portfolio. And he was you, you is serious. You know, he was kind of like annoyed and I was like well, you know, would be surprised. I have. I have, for instance, one client that really loves to reach. She's a writer and she really loves to read. Her financial needs are not that big. As long as she can buy a book and and she can read it, she's she's happy. And she's got some other...

...things that she does to like. She likes to go visit the grandkids and there's an expense there, but right her financial needs are not that high, whereas I have. There's another clan and thinking of that, you know, they want to experience life to the fullest and they want to travel the world and they have a list in they're checking them off, one at a time, places that they want to go and experience. Well, that's a lot more expensive. You got a plan to grow the Portfoli a little bit bigger and that can involve more risk. There's just a lot of things are going this is a snowflake theory. We're all different. I love the snowflake there and if you can, we've talked about that on the podcast, you can go to John's podcast page, go to the website Guardian rockwealthcom and get to his podcast page. You can find the snowflake there, because that's really cool. It's just another concept that John has created. We talked about a great concept a couple weeks ago, the personal paycheck protection plan, and this is just another concept in the concept of having your core and asking why a number of times so that you know. Because you can, you can lie to yourself and for some reason we think that's okay, but we know it's not...

...okay to light to somebody else. So when John Ask you those questions, you're probably going to be more honest with him than you are with yourself. And I can't afforce the honesty right because I'll call you out a little bit on it and we'll have fun with it. This a little bit uncare I will admit to you. It might be a little uncomfortable to talk about that, but it's just it's you, your spouse, significant other and me the only ones there. That's or maybe one of our team members, and we just get down into the core and from there build everything else. And and really at the end there's no wrong answers. Right, he doesn't matter. Why you wanted to buy that Harley Davidson, it's okay, right, that's right. But we all have our reasons why and it's okay. Your job is not to judge them but to help them achieve that why, and that's...

...that's what you get to do, and you do it through a comprehensive financial plan, which we talked about last time, which helps them manage their credit card debt, which we talked about two or three times ago, and make sure they have wills and trust. That up what we talked about two or three times ago.
